Student Support Overview

We Are A Family

Our students’ mental health and wellbeing are of utmost importance at Chertsey High School. We firmly believe student support motivates every pupil to flourish academically.

We have a diverse group of students, all special in their own way and that's why Chertsey High offers a diverse range of services in the form of counselling, mentoring, PSHE lessons, Teaching Assistants/ SEN Teaching Assistants, before/ after school clubs etc. All of these services are available to every single child.

On four days each week, there will be an extended afternoon session so that all students can participate in enrichment activities, including music and sport. The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award will also be integrated into school life to give participants a sense of purpose, focus and achievement in their non-academic studies. Our aim is to provide an enjoyable, challenging and rewarding enrichment programme of personal development for young people which is of the highest quality and the widest reach.

At Chertsey High we are a family, it is vital for all students to experience Chertsey High as a safe space.

Bringing therapy dogs to Chertsey High School

After many months of observing therapy dogs in action, we now have integrated therapy dogs as part of our ongoing school life, as we now have a better understanding of the benefits of animal assisted therapy in a school setting. Here at Chertsey High School we are able to offer Pet Therapy for our students.

Below are a list of the benefits of animal assisted activity and in particular the contribution of therapy dogs which can be used to calm fears, relieve anxiety, and teach skills.

Physical

Interaction with a furry friend reduces blood pressure, provides tactile stimulation, assists with pain management, gives motivation to move, walk and stimulates the senses

Social

A visit with a dog provides a positive mutual topic for discussion, promotes greater self-esteem and well-being, and focused interaction with others.

Cognitive

Companionship with a dog stimulates memory, problem solving and game playing.

Emotional

An adorable four-legged visitor improves self-esteem, acceptance from others, and lifts mood often provoking laughter.

Environmental

A dog in a school decreases the feeling of a sterile environment, lifts mood and this continues after a visit.
