Dear Parents, Carers and Students

Well done for all your hard work so far. Not long to go ...

Over the holidays, you need to plan your time carefully. You must take some time off, but equally it is just as important that you build in time for effective revision. Students all attended one of Michele Miller's workshops in the Autumn Term - remind yourself of her slides here

Please use the tabs below for guidance on what to revise and where to look for help and support.

There are lots of lesson slides that are titled specifically to help you revise (e.g 'Badinerie', 'Africa', 'Film Music', 'Music for ensemble', 'Popular music', etc).

Online resources e.g. videos, links to websites

Focus On Sound (this link will take you to the selection window where you can choose what you'd like to revise, I've suggested options for Badinerie and Africa below)

Badinerie: Eduqas - Badinerie - BackgroundEduqas - Badinerie - InstrumentsEduqas - Badinerie

Africa:Eduqas - Africa - TotoEduqas - Africa - Toto 2

Treat the Focus on Sound lessons like lessons in school - keywords in the margins of your book and write in any key information, you can test how much you have retained from each lesson by creating a 'blurt' page.  The blurting method - Exams and Revision | Birmingham City University (bcu.ac.uk)

Complete some note identification on: Note Identification (musictheory.net) - Ensure that in the settings (which is in the top right-hand corner) that you select treble clef, bass clef and alto clef.

Advice/tips on succeeding in your exam

  • Practise drawing out your circle of fifths
  • Revise the Africa harmony in the verse and chorus (you must be able to name the chords!)
  • Listen to some Baroque, classical, romantic and film music and try to identify specific features of the time period - make a playlist and add in music whenever you find a piece that you enjoy (I will place the composer of the week slides on our Teams page for some inspiration). For the pieces that you enjoy, write out the instruments that you can hear.
