Curriculum Intent
We firmly believe that all children, irrespective of their starting point, are entitled to a broad and ambitious curriculum. To that end, we are delighted to offer an innovative and knowledge-rich curriculum, which enables any student within Chertsey High School to fulfil their potential and develop the all-important skills and qualities, which will serve them well in later life.
The curriculum reflects Chertsey High School's ethos of knowledge, determination and love. Our curriculum delivers vital subject knowledge and skills, which are complemented by a raft of enrichment activities that broaden and extend the student experience.
Through our focus on the three pillars of Curriculum, Community and Careers, we empower students with the skills, knowledge and attributes they need to contribute to and thrive in a global community. Our curriculum is ambitious, adaptive, and accessible to all, reflecting and celebrating diversity, challenging bias, and championing inclusivity and community representation.
Implementation
The curriculum is designed to give all students the opportunity to develop as enquiring individuals who feel valued and respected, so that they, in turn, learn to value those around them.
We operate a 3:2 curriculum model with three years assigned for the delivery of our Year 7, 8 and 9 programmes of study. These programmes of study have been carefully crafted to ensure that they go beyond the requirements set out by the National Curriculum. Our highly flexible two year curriculum delivered in Years 10 and 11 allows us to create personalised guided pathways for our students.
In Key Stage 3, all students follow a broad and balanced curriculum including English, Maths, Sciences, History, Geography, Religious Education, Modern Foreign Languages, Computing, Music, Drama, Art, Technology, and PE. This ensures exposure to a wide cultural capital and supports belonging and representation for every learner.
In Key Stage 4, students pursue a personalised pathway within an inclusive framework that promotes the English Baccalaureate (EBacc) while also offering a rich range of GCSEs and vocational options. Subject leaders design curricula that are ambitious and knowledge-rich, while also ensuring accessibility and support for all learners.
Woven throughout are opportunities for personal development, PSHE and RSHE, careers education, and co-curricular enrichment—all aligned to our core values. Teaching strategies are inclusive, evidence-informed, and rooted in high expectations, relational practice, and respect for difference.
Curriculum Equality and Diversity
At Chertsey High School equality and diversity is promoted through an inclusive curriculum offer. We provide all of our students with the opportunity to succeed and to reach the highest level of personal achievement.
We shall achieve this by:
- The promotion of equality of opportunity
- Challenging discrimination in all areas of the curriculum
- Ensuring that curriculum planning will take account of the needs of all
- Monitoring and evaluating curriculum provision at academy and Trust wide level so that it represents a diverse culture and society and encourages tolerance and respect.
- Ensuring that the teaching methods used in the delivery of the curriculum will be diverse and appropriate for all needs and learning styles
- Providing resources that reflect and promote equal access for all
- Promoting cultural understanding and awareness through the content and delivery of the curriculum
- Actively closing gaps in attainment and achievement between students for all groups of students; especially students eligible for Pupil Premium, students with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities, looked after children and students from minority ethnic groups.
The curriculum at Chertsey High School is personalised to meet the needs of all learners. Flexibility in the curriculum allows for adaptations to be made that are responsive to the needs of both individuals and groups of students as they progress through our academy.
Impact
The impact of our curriculum is reflected in the well-rounded, confident and compassionate young people who leave Chertsey High School ready to shape their future—and the world around them. Through our focus on Curriculum, Community and Careers, we provide a first-class education that opens doors to the future.
We evaluate curriculum impact through student achievement, engagement, progression, and wider personal development. Particular attention is given to how effectively we close gaps and ensure equity for disadvantaged students, those with SEND, and other underrepresented groups.
Most importantly, we measure our success not only through results, but through the deep sense of belonging our students experience—every learner, every day. This is the beating heart of Chertsey High School: an inclusive, ambitious school where students grow in knowledge, determination, and love.
